Memories...
14/2/06 21:45So, it's Valentines Day. A day in which I never celebrate and probably never will. But, Happy Valentines Day...I suppose...
No, seriously, Happy VDay to everyone who does celebrate. Personally, I find this holiday a bit...smultzy...and I don't like that people feel they can only express their love/passion/desire on a certain, specific, day. If it were up to me...well, we'd all be like that every day and not worry about any specific day.
Yeah, I'm a dorky romantic when it comes down to it but...Valentines Day doesn't appeal to me the way it does others. I don't get ushy gushy about it. If I'm going to get warm and tingly, it won't be a specific day...it'll be any day I choose.
But anyhow, what I did do today was get a bit sentimental about my fan fictional past. Which is odd, I know, but it happened and I found myself reading stories I haven't read in years.
For instance, long before there even was a Harry Potter and I was writing various fandoms, I was reading and writing Boy Band stories. I know, I know. Boy Band. Oh god.
But, really, I have a lot to thank them for. Without them, I would have never read a fan fiction at all. In fact, I know I wouldn't have and thepathetic sad part is that I still remember EXACTLY what my first fan fiction was.
It wasn't a slash story.le gasp. Not even close. It was a story between Nick Carter cries for my lost innocence and an OFC. It wasn't great. It wasn't even good. But, it did serve its purpose. It introduced me to the online world of fan fiction.
It was the third story I ever read that was slash. :P
Which is actually pretty damn important or else...well, not a single story I ever wrote would have gotten written.
But I digress. Back to the memories...
The first boy band slash stories I was introduced to were the BSB variety. Kevin and Nick. Nick and Kevin. Those two were my absolute favorite. I read absolutely anything involving those two. It didn't matter if it was real people slash (which, on the whole, I rarely read anymore) or that I was probably way too young to be reading what I was reading. What mattered was...I enjoyed it and learned from it.
I don't remember the timelines, exactly, but I do remember somewhere between BSB blowing up in popularity and N'Sync coming onto the scene, I started writing as well. Horrible, horrible drivel but everyone has horrible, horrible drivel when they begin.
Now, as I said, I don't remember the timeline but I do remember N'Sync pretty damn well. I couldn't help myself because...squee, giggle, squee...I had a NEW boyband to toy with and read.
Justin and JC were my first jump in. Next came Justin/Lance and JC/Lance. I wasn't found of the whole Chris and Joey thing. I just...couldn't relate to it at all. Not because I didn't like it but they were...eh...well...cough...too old for me to picture. No, I didn't have an age thing but well, I just couldn't make it work and I didn't even try.
But, anyhow, today I did the unthinkable...I searched...somewhat forlornly (does anyone know how hard it is to find boyband slash anymore?)...for the stories that I used to adore. From N'syncgrrl (I still have her website on CD...crazy...) to Popslash junkies.
I only found a handful of stories - most of them I won't touch for quality - but I read them like I was a K addicted junkie looking for my next bump. Yeah, twenty points for anyone who gets that reference!
But...yeah, I spent time reading the stories that I could and...
God, I'm a sentimental idiot because it actually depressed me a little.
All I kept thinking of is that, once upon a time, those stories and that following was the SHIZNIT. By golly, I still remember when people who produced stories almost every day with a boy band tilt and I even remember when people slashed stories between marshall mathers and them...god, that was WEIRD...
But, not only that, it reminded me when slash and fandom was a whole lot easier. All you had to do is write, read and enjoy yourself. It wasn't its own sub-culture. It was...great.
And, I miss it, just a little.
Everyone should take some time and go back to their "first". It really puts a lot of things into perspective for you. Not just about your fandom life but about your REAL life.
Because, really...
Everything changes but somethings stay the same.
