I haven't done this in a while because real life has been horrible to me lately but just to prove that I am still alive I thought I'd post something fun. The standard disclaimer applies to this: I don't have permission directly from the author as this is for my own personal enjoyment; it's not optimized for printing; cover art created by me with help from google images and deviant art with all artists properly credited. If the author stumbles upon this and would like me to take this down, please let me know!

For those unfamiliar to this particular (work-in-progress) series:

Summary: Tony Stark is a Guide and has known that most of his life, but all the money and time hasn't let him find his Sentinel. Justin Hammer is a dedicated pain in the ass and not someone Tony willingly associates with. Until a chance incident at an Expo reveals that Justin's a Sentinel, and in desperate need of help.

Pairing: Tony Stark/Justin Hammer.

Category: Sentinel Alternate Universe.
Every single time I sit down to watch Suits I always wonder why I'm not watching it more. It's just an awesome show with characters I feel stupidly invested in. Even so I haven't read many fics for it (yet) and this happens to be the first one I read...and it's a coffee shop AU. I have no regrets.

This zine only contains one fic: Grand Soy Triple Dirty Chai by friskaz. It has standard formatting, is not optimized for printing, and doesn't contain any fanart beyond a few graphics I was able to find via google images. In all it's a very simply formatted zine so don't look for anything spectacular.

You can download it here or see a preview of it below the cut:

( Want some coffee, Harvey? )

If anyone has any suggestions for other fics that deserve a fanzine -- or maybe an anthology? -- feel free to nudge me in their directions. I make fanzines quite often when I have the time (I'm currently working on two at the moment) since all my fic reading is pretty much done on tablets these days thanks to my soon-to-be-ex workplace restrictions.

comments

Even though I'm incredibly late to the party (as usual) a few months ago I started to get into the Teen Wolf fandom. I didn't really have the time to sit down and wade through the fics available so I ended up picking the most popular pairing and just downloading at random. This particular "fanzine" is a result of that -- as is the folder on my desktop labeled 'The Sterek Files' as well. ;)

It consists of three different fics: Reasonable to Assume by Saucery; His Only Defense by LunaCanisLupus_22; To Have Outlived The Night by Stillane. It's not optimized for printing so it has standard formatting for easy reading on the computer or tablet. Coverart is by dauntingfire (used without permission but I'd be happy to change it if that offends) and modified by me to include text. All other illustrations were found via google/deviantart and hopefully credited properly.

You can download it here or preview it below the cut (fair warning: it's a large file so it might take a few minutes to load):

( Preview )

In the future I'll most likely disassemble this and give the bigger fics their own zines so I probably won't keep this up for long. I just thought I'd share for those out there who, like me, want to have a collection of stories at their fingertips in one convenient place.

comments

So after much waiting and nail biting, the teaser trailer finally dropped during the Super Bowl! What did everyone think?!

For my part...

The Good:

It looked like they were actually trying on this; the scene where Steve is running through what looks like a fire fight? Hell YEAH!

I don't care what anyone says: Chris Evans looks good in that costume and actually pulls it off without me immediately cringing.

Red Skull looked fucking awesome!

It looks like it might actually pull off being a period piece without making it feel like a period piece, which I think is important.

THE SHIELD -- I don't understand the upset with so many people over the indestructible shield having what looks like damage. Even the shield will have "scorch" marks and the paint will be scratched if you're getting hit with bullets and god knows what else. It's not like there are huge dents in the thing.

The Bad:

I hate (hate hate hate) how you can tell they CGI'd Chris' head on the body double in that one scene (if you've seen it, you probably know what I'm talking about but for those who haven't: Steve (Chris) is sitting on the bed being told not to let whatever happens change him.)

They didn't cut a good trailer together -- it wasn't nearly as "EPIC" as I was expecting it to be. I mean, c'mon, at least give me a shot of a stormtropper or something.

"How do you feel?" "Taller." Ugh.
For a while now I've been really unsatisfied with fandom and haven't been able to figure out why -- is the slew of mediocre fan fiction I've been reading? Is it the disappearing act from some of my favorite authors? Is it the fact that I rarely get time to write?

Well after thinking long and hard about it over the last few days, I think I figured it out: I don't have a 'main' fandom anymore. I used to -- Harry Potter and I were totally BFFs -- but now I no longer have the time to devote to it. Don't get me wrong, I stay in touch. I read and comment whenever I can. I just don't have the time to set up the proverbial shop and settle in for a while.

It makes me sad to think about -- being an active part of at least one fandom has always been hugely appealing to me. I love meeting new people and having discussions, especially with people who are just as enthusiastic about something as I am. I meet some very awesome people back when I was active in Harry Potter -- you know who you are and I still love you guys! -- but now it seems like the only "contact" I have with other fans is when I'm posting something on epic_recs (which I totally love doing; being a mod and reccer there rocks!) or when I comment on something (and that rarely leads to discussion).

I really want to jump back in -- Sherlock fandom, why must you tempt me so? -- but don't feel able to do so with any real consistency. I feel like the crazy aunt of fandom: I drop in with goodies that you may or may not want, flit around for a while, and then disappear like I was never even there.

Maybe I should make buttons?

comments

I have no why I wrote this. No, really. No idea. That said, I can't believe I don't have an Iron Man icon. That's just...not right. I need to rectify it. Soon.

Title: Distractions.
Author: Prentice
Fandom: Iron Man
Pairing: Jarvis/Tony
Disclaimer: I don't own it, but if I did, something like this would have probably happened.
Spoilers: This is set pre-Iron Man, but still has minor spoilers for the first movie.
Summary: Distracting. It's distracting, that's what it is. Very distracting. Almost too distracting.

Notes: This is an odd little story, as the majority of it takes place in weird little flashbacks that are just kind of plunked in the middle of dialogue. It might work for you, it might not. Either way, it was fun writing and I'll probably write more for these two. Also, a big thanks to ladylahatiel , whose fic was fabulous enough for me to want more Tony/Jarvis in my life.

comments

I've been wondering about the appropriateness of scanning and/or transcribing my old out-of-print zines lately -- is it appropriate to do? Should I only do it if I have permission? If I can't get permission from the author for whatever reason, should I leave out their story?

I just don't know the answers to any of those. I love the idea of being able to share some of my favorite works, ones that have either disappeared from the 'net or never quite made it there in the first place. I know that if The Foresmutters Project hadn't taken the time to transcribe some of the older ST zine stories, I never would have had the pleasure of reading 'This Deadly Innocence' or 'The Prize'. I'd love to be able to do that for a couple of other stories and fandoms.

I don't want to step on any toes, though. I don't want to start transcribing or scanning and then have the author or old fans come at me with pitchforks, especially since I only plan on doing it because I want to share the stories with others. You know, so I can chatter about them with someone else and not just have to think to myself how good they are.

=/

comments

These last few days have been extremely stressful. Between issues with the house, illness, and trying to catch up on work, I feel absolutely brain fried. The worst part is that I just came back from an impromptu vacation, which turned into a nightmare, and can't take another one for several more months. Not that I'm sure I even want to take another one with how badly the last one went -- having food poisoning while stuck in a car is horrific.

The bright spot in this is that I recently bought some fabulous fanzines. They're like-new and well worth the money I spent on them. I'll have to try to buy some more when I can. It gives me something to look forward to and add to the fanzine library I'm building up with my friends. :)

comments

I received this notice a few days ago and thought I'd share with those of you who might not have heard:

Ning has decided to do away with the free networks and switch all to premium. Justin and I won't be able to keep the site alive if a payment is involved, so sadly enough, BAM will be closed when Ning makes it's final switch. I hope you all can find some different video homes - and it's a shame to see this site go down in flames when we have made such an impact on the vidding community. I'm so incredibly sorry guys.

- Sequoya.

That basically means that anyone who is hosting videos over there and have them posted needs to find a new home or else they won't be viewable anymore. I have a few videos posted over there - mostly the ones that aren't allowed on youtube - so I'll be doing a few switches myself. I'm not sure where I want to host them as youtube is a killjoy and divshare isn't as user friendly as I'd like but I guess we'll see what happens.

comments

Older Spock finds him and, after proving that he is Spock, helps him find his way back. Well, I haven't had time to write this but I did manage to make a video that (sort of) captures what I want. Enjoy!

comments

New Who: Doctor Who Series 1 (Series 5; Series 31) Thoughts

Despite the fact that the new series of Doctor Who hasn't yet aired in the US (next week!), I pleased as punch to say that I've seen the first two episodes (The Eleventh Hour, The Beast Below) and absolutely loved every minute of them. That said I should probably backtrack a bit and talk about my initial reaction to New Who (which will further be known as NW, as I'm a lazy sod who doesn't feel like typing it out every time)...

Much like everyone else in the Who 'verse, I was saddened at David Tennant's depature as The Doctor and blown away by his exit, which was equal parts painful and fantastic. Unlike the Tennant loyalists, however, I was more than a little elated by the idea of having a brand spanking new Doctor and Companion on the way (sidenote: Donna will forever and always be my companion and I truly hope that they revisit her at some point because the Doctor Donna is an amazing thing). Ten was never really my Doctor, if you take my meaning, and though I thought RTD and David Tennant (and the Master, and Donna, and Wilf, and...) were a forced to reckoned with, I just really never connected to him in a way that said: THIS IS MY DOCTOR!

Matt Smith has cured me of that. He's brilliant and sassy and saucy and just perfect. I love his floppy hair and his bowties and his strangely positive but entirely all over the place attitude. He brings something fresh and fast and new to the Doctor that I didn't realize I was missing and Steven Moffat, you brilliant man, you know how to tell a story and weave in little details that I can already tell are building into some sort of crazy-awesome story arc. But, anyway, yeah, Matt Smith might just be MY Doctor and I can't wait to find out if I'm right. XD!

Now onto the new companion...

I really really feared that Amy Pond (I agree with 11; Amelia Pond is so much better) was going to be a Rose 2.0 and I wasn't prepared for that because Rose is Rose and no one else will ever be her (just like no one else will ever be Donna or Martha or Sarah Jane Smith or...). I also feared that she would somehow be absolutely awful in her role and...she's not. Don't get me wrong, she's not spanking but she's good and I liked (liked liked liked) her storyline with the Doctor. It was cute and sweet and didn't leave me feeling like they were trying to rip off previous companions in any way.

Now onto the show itself...

They're bringing back the Weeping Angels! Holy Fucking Balls! YES!

Now that I've gotten that out the way, I love the new design of the Tardis (and how 11 is so obviously in love with her (you sexy thing, indeed)) and I'm warming up to the new sonic screwdriver (thank you, dear). It's too early yet to say if the storylines are going to be fabulous but from what I've seen they're nicely paced, well thought out, and more lighthearted than previous series have been. They've also given us a bit of a lookie-lou into future episodes and between the Weeping Angels and River Song (I'll never not think that's a stupid name; double negatives for you!), I'm set for something special

I even enjoyed the Star Whale bit in the second episode (The Beast Below; cool story, bro) , which I know a lot of people have complained about. I do wish they'd cut down a bit on CGI, though. I mean, if there's any complaint I can make, it's that they're overdoing it with the CGI. As Eddie Izzard would say: scale it down a bit, we're British. ;)

Hmmm, what else...

Oh, yes, one last thing: GOTCHA! XD

comments

Fan Video: Go On (Star Trek XI)

I've been playing about with the idea of making another fan video for a while, especially since I've been tagged with a few video challenges lately, and wanted to do something with 'The Show Must Go On' by Queen (love that song!). Thanks to a kind soul posting clean clips of Star Trek XI (just clips, sadly; not that it matters, I've already pre-ordered my dvd!) and a particular interesting challenge, I decided to go for it. This is the result!:

Find more videos like this on BAM Vid Vault

Title: Go On
Vidder: Prentice
Music: The Show Must Go On by Queen
Video: Star Trek XI (Opening Scene; USS Kelvin)
Concept: The show must go on, even in the face of adversity.
Notes: This video was the product of the 'no-edits' video challenge. The basic premise of the challenge was to take a scene from your favorite film/show/mini and sync it with a piece of your favorite music without editing the actual video/clip. No edits were made to the actual video footage (yay!) and it synced up rather nicely, IMHO.

comments
